When researching Business Quality Management Systems and standards you need to understand your business rather well.  There are different systems for different types of businesses.  Some businesses for example might have sector-specific standards that they will have to have put together.  The Business Quality Management Standards are standards that are in place so that your business can run more smoothly and be more cost-effective.  There isn’t a question of what to do when something happens as there is a standard in place for that something. These standards will further share a vision with everyone at that particular company.  Standards are documents that require specifications, requirements, guidelines, and characteristics that are to be used consistently to ensure their processes, materials, services, and products are fit for their purpose.

Many government and private agencies only work with companies that have defined quality standards.  Because of this, more and more companies are getting on board with making up their quality standards.  However, this is completely voluntary and businesses can run without them.  There are also clients for those sorts of businesses.  However, growth will be prevented as the company can only operate without standards to a certain degree, and then it is very difficult to get a good grasp on everything that is going on in an organization that doesn’t follow standards. 

Business Quality Management standards and systems are not just used to improve the quality of the service and product of that organization but down the line.  Suppliers with quality standards are more reliable with both on-time performances as well as quality.  The idea with standards is that the organization will run like a well-oiled machine and the output will be far superior to those that do not have standards.

Many manufacturing is on-time production.  This means that they are not housing a lot of inventory.  This can be a disaster if there are no standards in place to ensure the machines are maintained to the level that they can continue to produce as expected.  You might have standards on how to maintain a machine to keep it running and not have downtime.  This could mean that you replace certain belts after so much use, even if they are not out of wear.  This allows the machine to stay up and running.  Without downtime, production will continue. 

However, companies without standards wouldn’t change the belt until it was showing signs of wear or after it broke.  They didn’t want to spend that money and effort on the part until it was completely necessary.  This means that they lost precious production time but also that they will not meet the expectations of their customer.  

Business Quality Management standards and systems are there to ensure that everything is running smoothly.  But, when something goes wrong there is always a plan in place to ensure that downtime is minimized.
